Zamboanga City, Philippines — In a historic milestone for the region, Zamboanga City proudly opened its first-ever flyover and the first in the entire Zamboanga Peninsula promising to ease traffic congestion and spur economic development in one of Mindanao’s busiest urban centers.

The P470-million Governor Camins Maria Clara Lobregat Highway Veterans Avenue Flyover officially opened to motorists following a ceremonial walkthrough and inspection led by Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Manuel Bonoan on Friday.

Stretching 437.70 linear meters, the flyover connects key transport corridors from Governor Camins Avenue to the Maria Clara Lobregat (MCLL) Highway in Barangay Tetuan, a vital route for daily commuters and transport operators in the city.

Joining Secretary Bonoan were Zamboanga City Mayor John Dalipe, former 3rd District Representative Maria Clara Lobregat, DPWH Regional Director Cayamombao Dia, and representatives from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Department of Finance, and National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA).

In his remarks, Bonoan praised the swift completion of the infrastructure, calling it “a remarkable achievement” given the challenges of urban construction. “To deliver a project of this magnitude in just two years and six months is quite a feat,” he said.

Originally proposed by then-Congresswoman Lobregat, the flyover was designed to decongest one of Zamboanga City’s busiest intersections, notorious for bottlenecks that disrupted both commercial and public traffic.

“This is more than just a structure. It represents our vision for a more progressive, connected, and accessible Zamboanga,” said Lobregat, who championed the project during her term in Congress.

City officials hailed the infrastructure as a critical investment in Zamboanga’s long-term development, expected to improve logistics, mobility, and the overall quality of life for residents.

Motorists expressed relief and optimism as the flyover officially opened. “This will save us a lot of time during rush hours. It's a huge help,” said a tricycle driver who plies the Veterans Avenue route daily.

As Zamboanga City continues to grow, the flyover stands as a towering symbol of its commitment to modern infrastructure and responsive urban planning paving the way, quite literally, for a more efficient and forward-moving future.
