The Provincial Health Office (PHO) of Zamboanga Sibugay has confirmed the first positive case of Mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) in the province, marking a significant public health development in the region.

According to the PHO, the case involves a three-year-old child from Tungawan, who is now recovering under medical supervision at Dr. George T. Hofer Medical Center (DGTHMC). The child initially sought consultation at the Tungawan Rural Health Office on May 5, 2025, where a blood sample was collected and subsequently sent to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) in Muntinlupa, Manila for confirmatory testing.

As a precautionary measure, both the patient and immediate family members were placed under home quarantine beginning May 5. Contact tracing efforts were swiftly launched to identify and monitor individuals who may have had exposure to the patient, in line with national health protocols.

Mpox is a viral infection transmitted primarily through close and prolonged physical contact. Common symptoms include fever, skin rashes, and swollen lymph nodes. Though often self-limiting, health officials are urging the public to remain vigilant and adhere to standard health measures such as proper hand hygiene, use of well-fitted face masks, physical distancing, and prompt medical consultation when symptoms arise.

In a statement, the Provincial Government assured residents that surveillance and response systems are fully activated to contain the situation. The Provincial Health Officer also called on healthcare workers and the general public to stay alert for other illnesses that may mimic Mpox, including chickenpox, measles, herpes simplex virus, HFMD, and similar febrile rash conditions.

All health facilities in the province have been instructed to strengthen disease surveillance systems and establish dedicated fast lanes for the early detection and management of suspected cases.

The PHO, in close coordination with the Provincial Department of Health Office, the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit, and other concerned agencies, will continue to monitor the situation and provide timely updates.

Residents are urged to remain calm, avoid the spread of misinformation, and rely solely on verified health advisories. For official updates, the public may visit the PHO from Mondays to Fridays or contact the hotline at 0917-621-8752.
