Strings of Passion: How Jobert Bryan Found His Voice

Music has always been part of Jobert Bryan’s life but he never imagined he would one day stand in the spotlight as a singer.

“I was inspired by my family,” he recalls. “My cousin, a bassist in various bands, and my aunt, a jazz singer in bars and clubs, influenced me from an early age.” At just 13, he received his first guitar as a gift from his parents. By 15, he was performing with bands and writing his own songs.

Born and raised in Cagayan de Oro, Jobert grew up immersed in the city’s vibrant yet often overlooked music scene. He pursued a Bachelor of Music Education major in Piano at Lourdes College, but his path changed abruptly when his father passed away during the pandemic.

“To support myself, I started working, initially selling barbecues,” he says. “Over the past three years, I’ve transitioned to working as a digital associate and engaging in networking. Currently, I also play as a musician in services at my local church, which brings me fulfillment and purpose.”

Despite life’s challenges, Jobert’s passion for music never dimmed it burned brighter. On June 27, he takes a major leap forward with the release of his single Patintero on Spotify, YouTube, and other platforms.

From Lead Guitarist to Storyteller

Initially more comfortable behind the guitar or keyboard, Jobert didn’t see himself as a singer. But songwriting slowly led him to the microphone.
“I realized that singing my own songs is a powerful way to connect with people,” he says.

One of his most unforgettable moments was performing his first original song as Sulat ni Bryan. “Seeing the audience connect with me was incredible. It reminded me of music’s power to reach the heart,” he recalls.

Today, he hones his vocal skills under the guidance of Sir Donie Galigao, learning proper techniques, articulation, diction, and stage delivery.

Influences & Inspirations

Jobert draws inspiration from TJ Monterde another homegrown Cagayan talent as well as Johnoy Danao, Project Romeo, Tothapi, and Rey Valera. Earlier in his career, his style was shaped by pop, emo, and punk influences such as Boys Like Girls, All-American Rejects, and Simple Plan.

The Story Behind Patintero

Patintero is a love song wrapped in nostalgia. “It’s for those hearts that once hoped and loved, but were left unrequited,” Jobert explains. The song likens love to the childhood game where no matter how hard you try to catch someone, they always slip away.

“My music brings back the traditional way of expressing love, like harana, but reimagined for today’s generation,” he says. “It reflects the pride and passion of being a Kagay-anon.”

His ultimate dream? To bring CDO’s music to bigger, even international stages. “I want to leave a lasting legacy for future generations,” he says, “spreading love and passion through music.”

Advice for Young Artists

“Stay grounded. Balance your skills with a strong character. Keep practicing, be disciplined, and always pursue your art with purpose sharing light, hope, and love with your audience.”

"We’re living in a country where local artists are often undervalued. My mission is to prove that our stories, our songs, and our voices matter not just here, but to the world." — Jobert Bryan
