The Department of Health (DOH) reported a steady decline in leptospirosis cases across the country, based on its latest surveillance data.

From August 17 to 21, only 18 new cases were recorded a sharp drop from the 1,112 cases reported in the first week of August following the onslaught of Typhoons Crising, Dante, and Emong. In total, 4,436 cases have been documented since June 8, a week after the official start of the rainy season.

Hospitals under the DOH also observed significant relief in admissions. At Tondo Medical Center, new admissions have decreased to just seven cases from the previous 68 per day. The National Kidney Transplant Institute reported only one new case compared to 25 daily admissions earlier this month, while East Avenue Medical Center logged zero new admissions this week from the previous 21 per day.

Despite the downtrend, DOH hospitals remain on heightened alert, with leptospirosis fast lanes and adequate bed capacity in place.

Health Secretary Ted Herbosa has also directed all DOH hospitals to ensure that no patient is turned away, in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s zero-balance billing program.
