Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian reported to lawmakers that the “Walang Gutom Program” has helped reduce hunger in the country by nearly 8 percent since its launch.

During the agency’s budget briefing, Gatchalian emphasized that the food stamp initiative has played a significant role in addressing food insecurity nationwide.

According to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), around 750,000 food-poor families households whose income is insufficient to meet their basic food needs remain vulnerable.

Currently, the program covers about 300,000 families, with a target to expand to 600,000 families by the end of the year and eventually reach 750,000 families by next year.

Gatchalian stressed that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has given a clear directive to ensure that by the end of his term, no Filipino family will go hungry.

He also noted that the current administration is the first to fully allocate funding for a nationwide anti-hunger program, which is envisioned as one of the President’s legacy projects to eradicate hunger in the Philippines.
