Rediscovering the True Meaning of Christmas

As December once again fills our streets with lights, music, and celebration, it is worth pausing to remember what Christmas truly represents. At its heart, Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ a moment in history that brought hope, humility, and unconditional love into a troubled world.

Yet today, that essence is slowly fading beneath commercial pressures and modern distractions.

Across malls and social media, the season is now dominated by sales, Santa Claus imagery, themed attractions, and endless parties. There is nothing wrong with enjoying these traditions; joy evolves with time.

But when festivities begin to overshadow the spiritual meaning of the season, we risk losing the very foundation of why we celebrate.

In a year marked by rising prices, economic struggles, and families still recovering from crises, the contrast is clear: while some celebrate in abundance, many Filipinos continue to face hardship.

This reality makes the message of Christmas more urgent than ever. Christ’s birth reminds us to look beyond ourselves to offer compassion, kindness, and generosity, especially to those who have less.

Christmas has always been a season for giving, not merely receiving. A warm meal shared with a hungry family, a simple act of kindness toward someone lonely, or a small gift to a child who has none these gestures reflect the true spirit of the season far more than any lavish party or expensive decoration.

Amid modern celebrations, let us bring back balance. Let us enjoy the beauty of the season while remembering its purpose. Let us celebrate not only with excitement, but with intention; not only with lights, but with love.

This year, may we rediscover Christmas as it was meant to be:

A celebration not of excess, but of grace. Not of noise, but of meaning. Not just of the season but of the Savior.
