PTFOMS CONDEMNS KILLING OF NEGROS BROADCASTER, VOWS SWIFT JUSTICE

MANILA, Philippines — The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFOMS) has strongly condemned the killing of broadcaster Julito “Jaz” Diamante Calo of La Castellana, Negros Occidental, describing the incident as a serious threat to press freedom and journalist safety in the country.

In a statement issued Sunday, March 22, PTFOMS Executive Director Jose Torres Jr. extended condolences to the victim’s family, friends, and colleagues, emphasizing the risks faced by media practitioners in the line of duty.

Calo, who hosted the radio program “Waswasanay sa Quinto Distrito” on 88.3 DNN News FM in Himamaylan City, also served as a job order worker in the local government.

The task force assured the public of its commitment to ensuring justice, noting that it has already coordinated with local law enforcement agencies to prioritize and expedite the investigation.

Initial police reports indicated that Calo was standing in front of his residence near the roadside on March 20 when a white sport utility vehicle approached from the direction of La Carlota City. An unidentified assailant reportedly fired at the broadcaster before fleeing toward the town center of La Castellana.

PTFOMS stressed that safeguarding press freedom is a shared responsibility, calling on media organizations, civil society, and other stakeholders to stand united in protecting journalists and upholding their fundamental rights.

Authorities also urged the public and members of the media community to remain vigilant and to provide any information that may assist in the resolution of the case.
