Bacolod City, May 20, 2025 — A heart wrenching tragedy struck Purok Lison, Barangay 1, Bacolod City on Tuesday morning, when a fire claimed the lives of two young brothers while their mother stepped out briefly to buy them food.

The victims, aged 8 and 6, were trapped inside their burning home and failed to escape the fast-spreading flames. According to witnesses, the family was scheduled to leave for Iloilo that morning, seeking a fresh start due to their difficult living conditions in Bacolod.

Moments before their planned departure, the older boy had requested food from Jollibee. Wanting to grant his wish, the mother left the house to buy the meal, unaware it would be the last time she would see her children alive. Upon her return, she was met with thick smoke, frantic neighbors, and the devastating sight of their home engulfed in fire.

Efforts to save the boys were futile. When responders were finally able to enter the smoldering structure, the children were found lifeless.

The grieving mother was inconsolable, blaming herself for the tragic loss. The family had hoped to start anew in Iloilo, where the children were supposed to begin school this coming academic year.

Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the blaze, while the incident has sent shockwaves across the community, prompting calls for greater fire safety awareness and readiness.

What was meant to be a hopeful new beginning ended in an unimaginable loss a powerful reminder of how swiftly ordinary moments can turn into life-altering tragedy.
